Detection of Point Sources in Cosmic Ray Maps using the Mexican Hat Wavelet Family

An analysis of the sensitivity of gaussian and mexican hat wavelet family filters to the detection of point sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays was performed. A source embedded in a background was simulated and the number of events and amplitude of this source was varied aiming to check the sensitivity of the method to detect faint sources with low statistic of events.Comment: Proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Strong Electromagnetic Fields and Neutron Stars (Havana, Cuba, 2011). 6 pages, 4 figure

Cosmogenic gamma-rays and neutrinos constrain UHECR source models

We use CRPropa 3 to show how the expected cosmogenic neutrino and gamma-ray spectra depend on the maximum energy of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at their sources, on the spectral index at injection and on the chemical composition of UHECRs. The isotropic diffuse gamma-ray background measured by Fermi/LAT is already close to touching upon a model with co-moving source evolution and with the chemical composition, spectral index and maximum acceleration energy optimized to provide the best fit to the UHECR spectrum and composition measured by the Pierre Auger Collaboration. Additionally, the detectable fraction of protons present at the highest energies in UHECRs, for experiments with sensitivities to the single-flavor neutrino flux at 1\sim1 EeV in the range of 108\sim 10^{-8} - 101010^{-10} GeV cm2^{-2} s1^{-1} sr1^{-1}, is shown as a function of the evolution of UHECR sources. Experiments that reach this sensitivity will be able to significantly constrain the proton fraction for realistic source evolution models.Comment: Proc. 35th ICRC, Busan, South Korea, PoS(ICRC2017)56

Multimessenger Constraints on Intergalactic Magnetic Fields from Flaring Objects

The origin of magnetic fields in the Universe is an open problem. Seed magnetic fields possibly produced in early times may have survived up to the present day close to their original form, providing an untapped window to the primeval Universe. The recent observations of high-energy neutrinos from the blazar TXS 0506+056 in association with an electromagnetic counterpart in a broad range of wavelengths can be used to probe intrinsic properties of this object and the traversed medium. Here we show that intergalactic magnetic fields (IGMFs) can affect the intrinsic spectral properties of this object reconstructed from observations. In particular, we point out that the reconstructed maximum gamma-ray energy of TXS 0506+056 can be significantly higher if IGMFs are strong. Finally, we use this flare to constrain both the magnetic-field strength and the coherence length of IGMFs.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Electromagnetic cascades as probes of cosmic magnetism

The existence of intergalactic magnetic fields (IGMFs) is an open problem in cosmology and has never been unambiguously confirmed. High-energy gamma rays emitted by blazars are unique probes of cosmic magnetism, as their interactions with pervasive radiation fields generate a short-lived charged component sensitive to intervening magnetic fields. Spatial and temporal properties of the secondary gamma rays generated in the electromagnetic cascade can provide information about the strength, power spectrum, and topology of IGMFs. To probe these fields, detailed simulations of gamma-ray propagation in the intergalactic medium are necessary. In this work the effects of magnetic fields on the spectrum and arrival directions of gamma rays are studied using three-dimensional simulations, emphasising the particular case of helical IGMFs

Changes in Iron Metabolism Induced by Anti-Interleukin-6 Receptor Monoclonal Antibody are Associated with an Increased Risk of Infection

    (1) Background: Treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with an anti-IL-6 receptor (anti-IL-6R) monoclonal antibody (tocilizumab) has been found to influence iron metabolism. The objective of the present study was to ascertain whether changes in iron metabolism induced by anti-IL-6R biologic therapy were independently associated with an increased infection risk. (2) Methods: A prospective longitudinal study of patients with RA treated with tocilizumab was conducted. RA patients treated with an antitumor necrosis factor α monoclonal antibody were also included as a control group. The primary outcome was occurrence of infection during the first 24 months of biologic therapy. (3) Results: A total of 15 patients were included, with a mean age of 51.0 ± 4,1 and 73.3% (n = 11) female. A multivariate survival regression model, adjusted for confounding factors, was fitted for each of the iron metabolism variables. Hazard ratios for being above the median of each parameter was considered. Transferrin saturation above the median value (>32.1%) was associated with a higher infection risk (HR 4.3; 95%CI 1.0-19.69; p = 0.05). Similarly, although non-significantly, higher serum iron was strongly associated with infection occurrence. (4) Conclusions: This study identified a probable association between infection risk and higher serum iron and transferrin saturation in patients with RA on anti-IL-6R biologic therapy. We suggest that both these parameters should be considered relevant contributing factors for infection occurrence in patients on anti-IL-6R therapy.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Magnetic Reconnection, Cosmic Ray Acceleration, and Gamma-Ray emission around Black Holes and Relativistic Jets

Particle acceleration by magnetic reconnection is now recognized as an important process in magnetically dominated regions of galactic and extragalactic black hole sources. This process helps to solve current puzzles specially related to the origin of the very high energy flare emission in these sources. In this review, we discuss this acceleration mechanism and show recent analytical studies and multidimensional numerical SRMHD and GRMHD (special and general relativistic magnetohydrodynamical) simulations with the injection of test particles, which help us to understand this process both in relativistic jets and coronal regions of these sources. The very high energy and neutrino emission resulting from the accelerated particles by reconnection is also discussed.Comment: Invited Review at the International Conference on Black Holes as Cosmic Batteries: UHECRs and Multimessenger Astronomy - BHCB2018, 12-15 September, 2018, Foz du Iguazu, Brasil, in press in Procs. of Science. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1608.0317

Methaemoglobinemia Induced by Poppers and Bupropion Intoxication in the Emergency Department.

A 40-year-old man presented to the emergency department with dyspnoea and fatigue after bupropion and popper consumption. Clinical examination was remarkable for central cyanosis not responding to supplementary oxygen. Arterial blood gas analysis showed a methaemoglobin value of 30.3%. Methaemoglobinemia was diagnosed and the patient was treated with methylene blue. However, during methylene blue administration, the patient developed a generalized tonic-clonic seizure that was successfully managed with diazepam. Combined intoxications can be a critical problem in the emergency department. Early recognition and treatment of poisoning are key for good patient outcome. LEARNING POINTS: Distinguishing toxidromes is critical for adequate treatment of patients with drug intoxication; the most common side effect of bupropion consumption is dose-dependent seizures. The diagnosis of methaemoglobinemia requires a high index of suspicion, particularly in a patient presenting with central cyanosis not responding to supplementary oxygen.Treatment with methylene blue is recommended when the percentage of methaemoglobin is above 30% or when the patient has symptoms related to methaemoglobinemia.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
